Public Safety

The Public Safety Committee helps keep our community safe by working with local police, firefighters, and emergency services to address concerns and improve how we respond to emergencies. We also look at ways to make our streets safer for everyone—whether you’re walking, biking, driving, or taking transit—by supporting things like better lighting, clearer crosswalks, bike infrastructure, and traffic calming around schools and parks. We team up with other city groups on bigger safety efforts and keep the community involved about how to make our neighborhoods safer and more welcoming for all.

If you would like to get more involved or have a suggested improvement project, please reach out.

CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy)

19th District Community Policing Office: 312-744-0064

Beginning in 1993, the Chicago Police Department has been committed to implementing a comprehensive community policing strategy – CAPS – that is designed to make residents an active partner in preventing and reducing crime in all of Chicago’s neighborhoods.

Role of Beat Officers

Under CAPS, a team of 8 to 9 beat officers is assigned to each of the City’s 277 police beats which allows beat officers and the public to get to know each other. This focus on beat integrity allows police and community to more closely monitor the problems on their beats, and to develop more effective solutions to those problems.

Critical elements to the City’s community policing strategy:

At CAPS meetings, residents and beat officers discuss priority crime and disorder issues, as well as develop strategies to address those issues.

Attending your beat meeting will give you the opportunity to get to know the officers that work on your beat, provide information about your and your neighbors concerns to police, meet other residents in your beat who may be working on similar issues, and bring back the latest information from police to your neighbors.
